10 Largest Oil Spills

Geology.com has a map of the 10 largest oil spills in history by estimated volume.  The Deepwater Horizon is currently 3rd.  What is number 1? The intentional spilling by the retreating Iraqi forces in the first Gulf War in 1991. The Iraqis opened the valves of the Sea Island Oil Terminal and poured oil on to the ground. They also intentionally spilled oil from tankers into the Persian Gulf. The estimated amount lost is about 3 times the amount so far spewed into the Gulf by the Deepwater Horizon well, which recently just past Pemex’s spill in connection with the 1979 Ixtoc exploratory well in the Gulf of Mexico. The Exxon Valdez is not on the list. But if for nostalgia or other reasons, you are interested, the story of the Exxon Valdez can be read at the Encyclopedia of the Earth.
