We’ll soon know
Only a couple of days left and the starkly different paths our country faces will be decided. It is perhaps the most consequential choice we have ever had to make.
If one person wins, we’ll continue lobbing explosives into countries we haven’t declared war on by means of unmanned drones. The other will prepare to make more ships so we can launch missiles from them into the same countries.
If one wins he will proclaim that government solves problems, helps children and the old and grows the economy. He will then begin the task of reducing government so that, like a “family,” it can live within its means. The other one will rail against government, say that it is the problem, if it only stepped back the great job growing machine which is Capital, would begin to work its magic. He will then begin the task of reducing government so that the wealthy can live outside their means.
If one wins, nothing will be done to address the existential threat of climate change. If the other wins, nothing will be done to address the existential threat of climate change.
Poverty? What poverty?
People will continue to buy lethal weapons, whose only purpose is to inflict mass casualties. And they will continue to inflict mass casualties at malls, movie theaters, highways, schools, churches, etc. One will say nothing. The other will says we have to change the attitude of mass killers.
One will argue that the Bush tax cuts on the wealthy should expire; he will then sign their permanent enactment. The other will argue that we can’t afford to let the wealthy be taxed any more by letting the Bush tax cuts expire; he will then sign their permanent enactment.
One will exalt in how Obamacare was saved. The other will rant and rave about it, until the insurance companies and drug companies explain how their profits have been locked in and in fact increased, and he will change things around the edges, but will leave the mass of it alone. He will then proclaim how he “fixed” it.
Both will collect ever more data on private citizens. Both will continue assassinations. Now that Presidents can assassinate American citizens, some thought should be given about making that a Cabinet position.
One will work hard to achieve a “grand bargain” by cutting down Social Security and Medicare. The other will simply cut down Social Security and Medicare and claim that he saved our children from being debtors to the Chinese.
So much rides on the choice. It’s no wonder everyone can think about nothing except what will be the outcome.
